What are ‘silent letters’?

A silent letter is a letter that appears in a particular word, but does not correspond to any sound in the word’s pronunciation. There are many silent letters  in English including the letter ‘e’ at the end of a word, the letter ‘b’ following ‘m’ and many, many more.They create problems for both native and non-native speakers of English, due to the spelling of many spoken words or pronunciation of written words.
